Assembly

Assembly is an integral part of school life, an ideal occasion for the entire school to learn, laugh and be together. At both the Junior and Senior School, Assembly takes place four mornings a week with a class, club or subject performing a sketch, making a presentation or organising a game, and is greatly looked forward to by all the students. Assemblies aim both to entertain and to educate, so all performances have an important academic or moral theme.

Assembly is the arena for most students to take their first steps on stage. Every child in the Junior School, from Early Learners upwards, takes part in Assembly once a term so all rapidly feel at home performing in front of a crowd. Many people are astounded by the confidence our students show on stage from such a young age but, by then, many are already stage veterans. They have also benefited from the encouragement of their peers, who provide a wonderfully supportive audience, ever willing to applaud any child brave enough to have a go and give their all. Indeed, many of the school’s best performers have cut their teeth during assemblies before dazzling audiences in Colombo and beyond on larger stages.

Towards the end of the Summer Term, the Junior School’ Simply the Best evening gives parents, teachers and students the opportunity to relive some of the best assembly items from that year and see them on a big public stage. This is an extremely popular event and, with every child in the Junior School performing, a very special occasion.

Life Studies

Every week at the Senior School, a guest speaker comes to speak as part of our Life Studies programme. We greatly value our relationships with the wider community in Colombo and consider ourselves very fortunate that so many distinguished speakers are willing to give up their time to visit us. Our students have had the opportunity to listen to ambassadors, the heads of UN agencies and NGOs, leading business people, Sri Lankan MPs, authors, sporting stars and many others. They have been inspired, amazed, shocked and moved by what they have heard and received a unique insight into the way the world works. Whether they want to be heart surgeons or fashion designers, they have also been able to listen to, and later meet, a leading figure in their field and find out how to make their dream job a reality.
