Elizabeth Moir School has a distinguished record of producing outstanding performances on Colombo’s stages and each show is eagerly anticipated. Through the medium of dance, drama or singing, it is incredible to see how many students become more confident and assertive in other areas of school life.
A production is about far more than what is seen on stage. There is plenty of opportunity for students to contribute backstage and feel very much a part of the show. Where appropriate, students play a very active role in the technical areas of light and sound as well as helping to make props and design sets.
In addition to providing considerable entertainment and unearthing new talent, productions at both schools serve to forge a strong team ethic and strengthen ties within the community.
Junior School
Towards the end of the summer term, the Junior School’s ‘Simply the Best’ evening gives parents, teachers and students the opportunity to relive some of the best assembly items from that year. This is an extremely popular event, a unique occasion for all members of the school to perform on a big stage.
Over the past few years, the Junior School has staged some memorable performances. From well-known plays (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; James and the Giant Peach) to those written by Junior School staff (Aladdin; Snow Queen) the students and staff have always worked exceptionally hard to produce memorable evenings.
Senior School
From the serious (Lord of the Flies, Ramayana) to the farcical (Moo!), the Senior School have produced a great variety of plays since 1996. In addition to the annual play, the Inter-House drama is a keenly contested competition and encourages the participating students to produce, direct and perform their own sketches. The high standard of each house, as they performed scripts ranging from Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband to Fawlty Towers, was extremely encouraging.
Since 2003, students from the Senior School have staged some quite spectacular musicals. With stunning costumes, evocative tracks and slick choreography, the trilogy of Dazzle, Breaking Bars and SOS have all been well received in the national press. There is always a tremendous buzz around the school in the days leading up to a major performance and all those involved take a great deal of positive energy and confidence from the support they receive.
