At Elizabeth Moir School we instil a sense of social responsibility and an appreciation of privilege in the students. Both schools are involved with raising funds and awareness for those people living in less fortunate circumstances. Every year, the Junior School students collect Christmas gifts for children affected by the 2004 Tsunami, the terrible catastrophe which still affects many people on the island. The Christmas concert charges an entrance fee and all the proceeds, in the form of practical gifts, are presented to a local orphanage by the Junior School Prefects.
The Junior School participates in several fundraising projects a year. They have initiated fun and innovative ways of raising funds for the IDPs in Sri Lanka. Other initiatives included taking part in World Book Day, where students were asked to dress up as their favourite character from a book they have read.
At the Senior School, an ongoing programme has been established with PEACE, an organisation that helps to combat and eradicate the sexual exploitation of children. Children from vulnerable areas within Sri Lanka visit the school and interact in a number of sporting and musical activities with our students.
The school has close links to Sarvodaya , the largest and most established NGO in Sri Lanka in charge of child nutrition in the IDP camps. Our students have raised money for this through a variety of activities from busking in school to auctioning their own art.
In addition to this the students also give of their time by visiting and volunteering to teach English at the Sarvodaya orphanage in Ratmalana. These experiences teach the students more than they can learn in a classroom and help to make them well-rounded young people.
Students are encouraged to care for their environment as well as their fellow human beings. The school is very particular about recycling waste and creating an environmentally conscious, green setting, which promotes learning and respect for scarce resources.
